Using Cherries to fight Gout

February 1, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

The evidence is strong, cherries do help to relieve gout. There are studies being carried out by the Agricultural Research Service’s Western Human Nutrition Research Center in Davis, CA that show definite proof. Anyone that tries to dis-credit this study is on idiot as far as I can see.

Is Beer and Alcohol Bad for Gout

February 1, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

Beer, Alcohol Bad For Gout.
Glass of wine, salad and baked potato?
Not if I can help it.

Gout, a rich man’s disease?
Not according to the latest studies and now
beer drinkers with gout beware.
It seems that the drink of the common man is the worst liquor
you can drink if you have gout or are prone to developing the
disease.

In the largest study ever on the subject of gout and liquor,
the research showed that as little as two beer a week can increase
your chances of a gout attack by 25%.
Men who drank two beer a day or more are 200% more likely to
develop gout as non-beer drinkers. The more beer you drink,
the more you increase your chances of an attack.

The guys who drank spirits or liquor drinks were less at risk of an
attack of gout but even one drink a day can increase your chances
and if you drink two a day the increase is in the 60% range.

Now get this, wine drinking in moderation may be ok and if you
have one glass a day it may even lessen your chances of getting
an attack of gout.
Obviously when it comes to gout, all alcohol is not created equal.

The study (Massachusetts General Hospital), was over a 12 year
period and included 47,000 men. 730 of them developed gout in this time.
Middle aged men either overweight or on the high side of the
scale are at greatest risk of developing gout.

Purines again are the culprit.
Food and drink high in purines a substance that breaks down into
uric acid which in turn develops needle-shaped crystals in the joints
are what cause gout and as it turns out beer is high in purines.
Other types of alcohol are not so high.

So a big juicy steak with lots of fat and a few beer on a great
summer day may not be the best idea for those of us that
suffer with gout and it seems this study has proven that alcohol
and gout don’t mix.
I guess we’ll have to settle for a glass of wine, salad and a baked
potato……not!!!

Finally something new in the drug community for us long forgotten
Gout Sufferers. That is if you want to sit for two hours with a needle
in your vein every two weeks for a year. But, as we know we’d do anything to get rid of the pain.

Puricase, First New Drug Treatment Approach For Gout In 40 Years, Could Potentially Revolutionise Treatment For Some

The first new class of drug to emerge in 40 years for treating chronic gout has the potential to radically alter the outlook for thousands of patients unable to benefit from currently available therapies, says the drug’s developer Savient Pharmaceuticals Inc. who presented Phase II data at this year’s annual meeting of the European rheumatology community, EULAR.Puricase (PEG-Uricase), a drug currently in Phase III clinical trials has been shown in smaller trials to rapidly eliminate body stores of excess uric acid (urate). Uric acid can lead to the formation of crystals which are deposited in joint tissues where they accumulate as tophi causing pain and inflammation. Often these clump together to form disfiguring nodules. Gout has been described as the most painful of all rheumatological conditions.Savient Pharmaceuticals Inc, the small New Jersey-based company developing the treatment says Puricase is a polyethylene-glycolated recombinant version of the porcine enzyme, uricase. All mammals except humans and primates produce the uricase enzyme which breaks down uric acid leaving very low levels in the blood circulation with no untoward effects. Uricase converts uric acid to the more water-soluble metabolite allantoin that can be readily excreted. The drug is administered by two-hour intravenous infusions every two or four weeks and would probably be indicated initially for patients with hyperuricaemia – excess blood levels of uric acid resulting in severe tophaceous gout, resistant to or intolerant of conventional therapy.

Many physicians and patients believe older therapies are sub optimal and want better treatments, commented Dr Horowitz. Early intervention with Puricase as an alternative to conventional therapy could potentially prevent the accumulation of uric acid crystals that form tophi and keep patients from experiencing flares, he suggested. However, this would have to be the topic of further investigations. Puricase would need to be administered over six to 12 months only to eradicate body stores of uric acid. Because uric acid stores take decades to build up to the level where they cause symptoms, no further treatment might be needed. Most gout therapies however need to be taken regularly for life.

My personal Cherries Help Gout Study

Ok, there is something to this cherry and gout thing and I firmly believe that my personal ‘cherries help gout’ study is working.
I have gout and I mean badly. I’ve had it for 16 years and I have extreme gout. I’ve had it in my toe, ankle, knee, wrist and when it hits my knee (which is the worst) I have been on couch for 10 days unable to do anything other than hobble to the bathroom on one leg. During this time I only sleep about 3 hours a night because of the extreme pain.

I’ve written posts about the fact that it happens more during the winter because I’m not as active and I always seem to gain that extra 10 pounds. The other factor is I don’t drink as much water in the winter and I should.

Ok, I’m back, I just went around the trail on the property on cross country skis. Have my exercise for today.

So.. I’ve been doing my own study on using cherries to help curb my gout and it’s working.
Cherries do help, the past few winters have been bad for gout and this winter I haven’t had any major attacks at all. Cherries do help gout.
