Hi, I’m Mark Saville and I have gout.
I always tell people it feels like someone took a hammer and hit your joint.
Here’s what my gout looked like in my ankle.

It started out as little pain in the joint and I thought maybe I had twisted my ankle or something. Most people get gout in their big toe but I have it extremely bad and tend to get it in larger joints.
I didn’t pay too much attention to it at the time but about 3 am after I’d gone to bed I woke up with this extreme pain, my ankle was swollen 3 times it’s size and there was no way I was going to get back to sleep.
Even over the counter pain killers didn’t do a thing to curb the pain.
It was swollen and red like in the picture.
I didn’t know what to do, I had no idea what it was and was getting a little worried.
I just layed around for the whole day and finally got an appointment
with my doctor. I hobbled down there and he said I have gout.
He prescribed Colchicine and told me not to take too many.
I didn’t realize how many was too many so I started popping them.

By this time I was getting fed up because the stuff only works if you

This works. I woke up Wednesday morning and I could feel the familiar tightness around my ankle and prepared for an attack. I hit the culprit hard with my cherry remedy twice that day and by the next day, the tightness was gone and no attack. High uric acid in the blood is the underlying cause of gout and if we can keep that down then we will have fewer attacks. Hyperuricemia(high uric acid) is thought to be caused by either the body’s ability to dispose of the uric acid or an over production of uric acid. 90% of people with gout have a hard time getting rid of excess acid that cause monosodium urate crystals, the painful crystals that form in the joints.
So obviously we need to find a way to help our bodies get rid of it faster. Problem is, 90%of what you read deals with eating low purine foods which produce the uric acid when more weight should be put on getting rid of what you have. Telling us what not to eat is a waste of time. In fact if we maintained a diet with no purines at all, the best we can hope for is to lower our mean serum uric acid concentration by 1 mg/dL when a level of anything over 6 is considered high.
Over and over I’ve read ‘don’t eat food high in purines such as organ meats, brains or sweetbreads.’ I can’t remember the last time I’ve eaten any of those things and I still fight with gout. There is no cure for gout by the way, the best we can do is find a control.
I believe that control is to lower the amount of uric acid in our systems. But, just as the level becomes high over time, it’ll also take time to dissolve the crystals that have built up.

1 Beer seems fine but not 10

It seems that having the occasional beer won’t make your gout worse it’s the weekend binge that can be dangerous. Having a single beer a couple times a week might even help the gout situation because it helps to relieve stress and a stressful situation just might bring on a gout attack.
